Set in the mythical world of Middle-Earth, the hobbit is the prequel to the much loved Lord of the Rings series. It is actually the first book in the series written by J.R.R.Tolkien, an acclaimed English writer and philologist.
The Hobbit is an enthralling and exciting adventure about a company of dwarves led by the broody Thorin Oakenshield, Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit (fictional being), and the famous wizard Gandalf, who journey to the lost dwarven kingdom in a quest to retake it from an evil dragon Smaug.

It is a riveting tale of fantastical creatures such as Elves, giant eagles, and evil beings called orcs and goblins. Throughout the story every characters is given a complete makeover as they grow to be better or worse versions of themselves. It is a  story of vengeance, a battle of good vs evil, of bravery and courage and honour and redemption.

For those of you who have read or watched the Lord of the Rings, it is also what sets the backdrop about 50 years before the main storyline. The Misty mountains, the dwarves, the first ring of power (the one ring), the famous Elves such as heroic Elrond, the angelic Lady Galadriel, the much loved Legolas and his ruthless father Thranduil, and of course the enigmatic and immortal wizards Saruman the White and Gandalf the Grey, it introduces the much loved characters that are vital to the main storyline, and also fleshes out their backstory.

As the first book in the series, it has many more explanations about the world of middle earth as compared to the main storyline. The evil of Sauron is just beginning to stir, the spark that ignites the war in the main story is just beginning to burn. As such Tolkien also included a lot of details and characters in it that are just barely mentioned in the Lotr books. As a linguist Tolkien even made an entirely different language that is introduced in this book including Sindarin and Quenya.

As an avid book reader, I recommend this book and the movie to all my readers.
